![]() In this report, we present a theory for how snakes slither, or how wheelless snake robots can be designed to slither, on relatively featureless terrain, such as sand or bare rock, which do not provide obvious push points. The details of this friction-based process, however, remain to be understood consequently, snake robots have been generally built to slither over flat surfaces by using passive wheels fixed to the body that resist lateral motion ( 18, 20– 22). ![]() Previous investigators ( 7, 9, 18, 19) have suggested that the frictional anisotropy of the snake's belly scales might play a role in locomotion over flat surfaces. This key assumption has informed numerous theoretical analyses ( 12– 17) and facilitated the design of snake robots for search-and-rescue operations. ![]() This report will focus on lateral undulation, whose utility to locomotion by snakes has been previously described on the basis of push points: Snakes slither by driving their flanks laterally against neighboring rocks and branches found along the ground ( 6– 11). Terrestrial snakes propel themselves by using a variety of techniques, including slithering by lateral undulation of the body, rectilinear progression by unilateral contraction/extension of their belly, concertina-like motion by folding the body as the pleats of an accordion, and sidewinding motion by throwing the body into a series of helices. Limbless invertebrates such as slugs propel themselves by generating lubrication forces with their mucus-covered bodies earthworms move by ratcheting: propulsion is achieved by engaging their hairs in the ground as they elongate and shorten their bodies ( 4, 5). These methods can be as efficient as legged locomotion ( 1) and moreover are particularly versatile when moving over uneven terrain or through narrow crevices, for which the possession of limbs would be an impediment ( 2, 3). Limbless creatures are slender and flexible, enabling them to use methods of locomotion that are fundamentally different from the more commonly studied flying, swimming, walking, and running used by similarly sized limbed or finned organisms.

The researchers note that a negative COVID-19 test does not exclude the patient from having been infected with COVID-19 and “ought to be interpreted with caution in the context of typical symptoms.” In addition, other causes of POTS symptoms should be excluded, including dehydration, other infections, anxiety and anemia. “Much remains unknown about the specific mechanisms responsible for the POTS-like symptoms in post-COVID-19 patients or how long these symptoms will last, but chronic symptoms are expected in a subset of patients based on this initial clinical experience.” “As reports of COVID-19 patients being impacted by long-term symptoms unrelated to their original diagnosis continue to grow, it’s important to raise awareness of POTS as a possible long-term complication,” said Madeleine Johansson, MD, PhD, Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University, Malmo, Sweden and one of the lead authors of the case report. ![]() POTS was confirmed using active standing and head-up tilt tests. All three patients experienced COVID-19-like symptoms in the spring of 2020, but not all sought medical attention or received COVID-19 tests at the time of their symptoms. In this case report, researchers discuss three Swedish patients who were diagnosed with POTS more than three months after presumed COVID-19 infections. There is no cure or standard treatment, but it can be managed with self-care and some medications. The causes of POTS are usually undetermined, but it can be precipitated by viral illness, severe infection or trauma. It usually affects young and middle-age women. POTS is a condition that’s most commonly known for causing dizziness upon standing, but symptoms can include palpitations, headache, fatigue and blurred vision. Months after a COVID-19 infection, patients may experience “long-haul” symptoms like rapid heart rate, dizziness upon standing and lightheadedness consistent with a diagnosis of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), according to a clinical case report in JACC: Case Reports. ![]() ![]() Tailored to support creative individuals and studios of every size, Redshift offers a suite of powerful features and integrates with industry standard CG applications. Two decades after The Persistence of Memory, Dalí recreated his famous work in the painting The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1952-1954). The melting watch, one of Dalí’s most powerful and potent motifs, continued to play an important role in his art. Similar versions of this self-portrait appear in other paintings by Dalí like The Great Masturbator (1929). Some scholars have also drawn a parallel between the self-portrait and a section of Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights (1510-1515) – on the right side of the left panel Bosch depicts rocks, bushes, and small animals that resemble Dalí’s profile with the prominent nose and long eyelashes. According to Dalí, the self-portrait was based on a rock formation at Cap de Creus in northeast Catalonia. The influence of the Catalan landscape also appears in another element of the painting: the artist inserts himself into the scene in the form of a strange fleshy creature in the center of the painting. He set the scene in a desolate landscape that was likely inspired by the landscape of his homeland, the Catalan coast. ![]() Ants, a common motif in Dalí’s art are usually linked to decay and death. The idea of rot and decay is most evident in the gold watch on the left, which is swarmed by ants. When asked about the limp watches, the artist compared their softness to overripe cheese saying that they show “the camembert of time”. Dalí paints his fantastical vision in a meticulous and realistic manner: he effortlessly integrates the real and the imaginary in order “to systemize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality”. The painting depicts a dreamworld in which common objects are deformed and displayed in a bizarre and irrational way: watches, solid and hard objects appear to be inexplicably limp and melting in the desolate landscape. ![]() Frequently referenced in popular culture, the small canvas (24x33 cm) is sometimes known as “Melting Clocks”, “The Soft Watches” and “The Melting Watches”. The Persistence of Memory (1931) is one of the most iconic and recognizable paintings of Surrealism. ![]() Please be aware of websites and/or third parties that falsely claim our endorsement.
